Ryan Lague: The Kung-Fu Master - Guitarability - Unrivaled Technology

Ryan Lague: The Kung-Fu Master

Jan 23, 2016 | Our Story

Kung Fu. It means, ‘supreme skill from hard work.’ A great poet has reached Kung Fu. The painter, the calligrapher, they can be said to have Kung Fu. Even the cook, the one who sweeps steps, or a masterful servant, can have Kung Fu. Practice. Preparation. Endless repetition. Until your mind is weary, and your bones ache. Until you’re too tired to sweat. Too wasted to breathe. That is the way, the only way one acquires Kung Fu. Unfortunately, boy, you have not.Marco Polo 2014

When you become a Guitarability user, Ryan Lague becomes your Kung Fu Master. This is the work and the backbone of the user experience that you will get used to as you progress through the exercises that Ryan created for you. Ryan designed the entire learning path you embark on in the Guitarability app – perhaps from the first time you strummed the guitar to the first chord you played to your first full song.

Ryan’s dedication to the project allowed us to integrate more than 50 techniques over a range of seven skills, each with about 25 exercises to take you from beginning to absolute genius. A lot of what you see and hear on your iPad screen cultivated in Ryan’s mind. He wrote and performed every piece of music.

Ryan’s music experience is vast: he’s a former Berklee College of Music student that has spent more than a decade on stage, behind the scenes, in the studio, and in the classroom. But never has he been asked to produce the sheer amount of music required to ensure the Guitarability user can progress from beginner to expert within a single app.

One of his greatest challenges came in making sure the app was rewarding and compelling for all skill levels. Through careful analysis of the learning curve of his real life students, he needed to find a happy zone in the speed at which the average user would progress. It couldn’t be too slow and boring, but it couldn’t move too fast either. To be a truly impactful product, Ryan had to make Guitarability worthwhile for every guitarist.

A guitar app: Kung Fu? Thus is the impact of Guitarability’s creative and musical genius, Ryan.
